The German Embassy, together with the DAAD and the Goethe-Institute continued their successful “German Days” series with an event held at the Language Faculty of Universiti Putra Malaysia in Bangi. The 80 participating German language students learned more about living in Germany, collected information on study opportunities and had fun during the Germany Quiz.
Initiated by Dr. Renate Kärchner-Ober from the Department of Foreign Languages, the “German Afternoon” at UPM Bangi received very encouraging responses from the students, who are currently enrolled in the German Language Programme. The session started with an opening speech by the Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdul Mua’ti @ Zamri Ahmad.
The “German Team”, consisting of representatives from the German Embassy, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Goethe-Institute, then joined hands to provide information about studying and living in Germany. Cultural Attachée Kathrin Heidl was the first to share and provide a panoramic view of Germany to the students with the help of a power point presentation. The Director of DAAD, Dr. Guido Schnieders, gave an insight into the full spectrum of higher education in Germany, from the education system to the comparison of tuition fees and living expenses of various countries.

To make the presentation livelier, Dr. Schnieders also introduced the students to some attractive places in Germany, including the well-known Neuschwanstein Castle of the “Mad King” of Bavaria, Ludwig II. The German Team was dishing out the fun, while at the same time providing enlightening facts and educational information for those interested in studying in Germany. Everybody had a great time during the Germany Quiz, where most of the students were able to come up with the correct answers, despite the German Team’s intensive efforts to distract them..
The interesting and lively afternoon ended with an awards ceremony for the five lucky students, who had managed to come up with the correct answers and the handover of a letter of acceptance to a very happy Indonesian student, who received a DAAD scholarship.
Everybody involved, including the German Team, greatly enjoyed the German Afternoon at UPM Bangi and we hope that all the students gained a greater insight into the country, it's culture and it's people, after putting so much effort into learning the German language.
