A German Afternoon in Penang

Once upon a time…on a Saturday in October, more than 150 secondary school students from all over Malaysia came to Penang to participate in a German story telling competition.
Dressed in colorful costumes and equipped with beautifully crafted props, the students retold fairy tales in German and enacted them for a whole morning. With a lot of commitment, Cinderella, Rapunzel, the Sleeping Beauty & Co were being haunted by stepmothers and evil witches, but finally managed to marry their princes and live happily ever after.
In the afternoon, the no less committed German Team, consisting of DAAD head Dr. Guido Schnieders and cultural attachée Kathrin Heidl, organized an information event on studying in Germany.
After viewing a short film on student life in Germany, Dr. Schnieders gave a talk on tertiary education in Germany, which informed the audience not only on the high quality of German higher education but – to the great surprise of those present - also on the fact that studying is completely free almost everywhere in Germany.

Afterwards, the German Team hosted a quiz on Germany, which received an enthusiastic response from the audience. Even though the team tried its best to distract the participants with philosophical questions (would Germany have won the football World Cup if Michael Ballack had been German Chancellor?), they would not be dissuaded from the right answers and found the correct solution, so that a great awards ceremony could be held in the end.
Everybody involved had an informative day full of German culture and at the same time enjoyed themselves greatly during the event, which surely did not take place for the last time.
