H.E. Ambassador Nikolaus Count Lambsdorff was invited to a dialogue at the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce to talk about the upcoming elections in Germany.

Ambassador Count Lambsdorff started the dialogue with urging all German citizens to use their right to vote. He is of the opinion that in a democracy the German population has the obligation to vote. Even though most Germans find the current election campaigns boring and the result of the election foreseeable, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of this election. Most people do not know that in Germany we do not directly elect the chancellor. We elected the parliament who then decides on the next chancellor. The Ambassador informed that the makeup of the parliament is the interesting part about this year’s election. It will be interesting to see which smaller parties become part of parliament and which parties will form a coalition.

The Ambassador believes that Germany is not in the mood for change. However he emphasizes that change is vital. He wants to see the change in the makeup of parliament. He is optimistic that many people will vote. The percentage of voters is currently high and hopefully enough young people - who are supposedly not interested in politics -  will use their right to vote in the upcoming election.

One of the questions from the audience was what will change for the Federal Foreign Ministry after the upcoming election. Ambassador Count Lambsdorff explained that the international topics will remain the same regardless the outcome. The election focuses on the national topics because international topics such as terrorism cannot be solved on the national level.

Another important topic were the German-Malaysian relations, the necessity to draw more attention to Malaysia. The Ambassador agreed that there should be more focus and awareness on Malaysia. But therefore Malaysia also has to play an active role in promoting the country . Especially German companies should be aware of Malaysia as it is a splendid basis for investment.

The response to this dialogue was good. Everyone appreciated the open dialogue and wished for further events along the lines.
