Giving Power to Women – The German Embassy supports the MSRI Elham Refugee Women Project
January 2018. It was a moving moment when about 20 women refugees of the MSRI Elham Project presented German Ambassador Graf Lambsdorff with a token of their appreciation, a hand sewn batik toiletry bag. The Ambassador and the Embassy’s Micro Fund Coordinators Mr. Uwe Schlott and Ms. Heidi Giebel visited MSRI on 11 January 2018 to check on the progress of the Embassy’s donation.
The funds were used to purchase extra sewing machines and supplies for the Elham Refugee Women Project and to renovate and upgrade the Health Clinic and the centre’s school.
One of the refugee women, who had only learned English once she came to Malaysia by taking lessons at the centre, thanked the Embassy for the donation, explaining that the newly acquired skills allowed her to earn some extra income to support her family.
MSRI is a non-governmental organisation, dedicated to providing education, health, livelihood and emergency programmes to refugees and asylum seekers from minority communities living in Malaysia.
The Elham project aims to provide income generation opportunities and skills building to refugees and asylum seekers, as well as MSRI Education Programme.
