"Political Developments in the German Election Year: What is the Impact on the European Union?"
A strong affirmation for the European identity - the Head of the EU Delegation H.E. Ambassador Maria Castillo Fernandez and German Ambassador H.E. Holger Michael maintained that the strong continuity of the European Union following, most recently, pro-EU Macron's victory in France. H.E. Maria Castillo Fernandez said that though not straight forward, the European spirit is still alive and strong, supported by many and despite the increasing hurdles in its path, will continue to reinvent itself to address the concerns of all. Her Excellency compared the European Union to a big train, with France and Germany pulling the locomotive, 28 wagons in all, such is the importance of both France and Germany to the pact.
German Ambassador, H.E. Holger Michael shared his insights about the coming federal election, which will take place on the 24 September this year. Here, from projected polls and the 3 wins in state level, voter sentiment is one of stability. The party of Angela Merkel, CDU, still occupies a centre of the mood of the German electorate and far-right nationalist parties like AfD are currently unable to gather the popularity they previously enjoyed.
The panel discussion drew a diverse crowd of about 100 interested participants. Many thanks to the Asia-Europe Institute at University Malaya for co-hosting this event.
